Is there any point to my life?

At some stage in our lives we all find ourselves asking: Is there a point to all this?

What am I here for? What should I do with my life?

Now there’s even more reason to wonder.

Millions of people around the world have had their lives turned upside down by everything that's happened in the last few years.

Sadly, on top of everything else, many have lost their peace of mind and sense of purpose - even, in some cases, their sense of identity.

As well as the fear, anxiety and pain associated with modern life, countless thousands of us have found that our dreams are in tatters, and even our jobs and livelihoods are at risk in this time of uncertainty.

Maybe it's to do with covid, conflict, climate change or the rising cost of living. Either way, many of us are facing yet more unwanted change as we try to sort out our future.

Whatever we’d been working towards, taken for granted or dreamed of doing has to be put on hold - maybe indefinitely.

And for some people the future looks very empty indeed.

But God doesn’t see it that way. Before he even created time, he dreamed up each one of us and planned a bright future for every single person.

And that hasn’t changed.

Worldwide catastrophes may have ruined our plans, but not God’s.

WHAT DOES THE BIBLE SAY ABOUT MY LIFE?

God has a lot to say about the value he places on each one of us. You are a unique creation, put on earth for a reason and greatly loved!

1. God knew you before you were born. No one is here by accident.

You watched me as I was being formed in utter seclusion,

as I was woven together in the dark of the womb.

You saw me before I was born.

Every day of my life was recorded in your book.

Every moment was laid out before a single day had passed.

(Psalm 139:13-16)

2. God watches over you every day to protect you. If you've ever said, 'Someone up there is looking out for me' - you're right!

The LORD keeps you from all harm

and watches over your life.

The LORD keeps watch over you as you come and go,

both now and forever.

(Psalm 121: 7-8)

3. God knows all about you, even how many hairs you have on your head (and keeps count!).

Jesus said, ‘What is the price of two sparrows—one copper coin? But not a single sparrow can fall to the ground without your Father knowing it. And the very hairs on your head are all numbered.

'So don’t be afraid; you are more valuable to God than a whole flock of sparrows’ (Matthew 10:29-30).

4. He created you for a purpose and wants to bless you.

‘For I know the plans I have for you,’ says the LORD. ‘They are plans for good and not for disaster, to give you a future and a hope' (Jeremiah 29:11).

Jesus said, 'I have come in order that you may have life - life in all its fulness' (John 10:10).

THE VITAL FIRST STEP

If you have no idea what your purpose in life might be, don’t panic. Think of it as an adventure! Jesus has a great plan for you, so trust that he will lead you forward one step at a time.

Letting Jesus take charge of your future is the first and most important step in finding God's purpose for your life.

You will probably find your priorities change, for a start. So will the way you see the world around you.

One man who decided to give his life to God found that was true - literally. He prayed and invited Jesus to come into his heart and help him live God's way from now.

The next day he woke up and looked out of the window. 'What's happened to the tree?' he asked his wife. 'It's different - the leaves are so green!'

But it wasn't the tree that had changed.

HEALTH WARNING

Don't expect life with Jesus to be easy. It won't.

But it will never be boring.

Someone once said that they were afraid of being less than themselves if they gave their life to God. But he loves you and wants you to be all that you were created to be.

Only with him can we fulfil our true potential. Don't settle for anything less.

The LORD will work out his plans for my life - for your faithful love, O LORD, endures for ever.
